The Creativity Project: Getting Uncomfortable

Doing things that make me uncomfortable to get myself used to it.

I started a YouTube channel for my writing. I did this for a few reasons.

  1. I have social anxiety and have to get used to talking to people (or in this case, a camera). It will become important when I go to conventions and book signings in the future, so it’s good to practice.
  2. It’s teaching all about recording and editing videos. Two skills I will need when it comes time to do book promotions.
  3. This one’s the most important: it holds me accountable for my goal of self publishing my debut novel before the year is over.

Over the years, I have gotten really good at staying in my comfort zone, not really rocking the boat. I stuck with jobs that I hated because job hunting wasn’t fun. I stayed in toxic friendships because I was uncomfortable asserting myself.

But now, I want to try to push my boundaries as far as my comfort zone. That starts with forcing myself to sit down and record myself talking about writing and my process.

I’m super new to the process, so each step takes forever. I hope with some practice, I will get better and faster at it so I can get everything down pat before I need to make my marketing materials for my books.

Hopefully, this means that I will become better at talking to people and holding myself accountable, but only time will tell.

What new thing are you trying to get yourself out of your comfort zone?
