The double-edged sword of goals

So, February sucked. What was supposed to be the month that I got my ish together and got caught back up on my goals for the year became the month where I fell even further behind.

It started out great: I overengineered an at home writing retreat for my birthday where I had the house to myself and killed my goals. I then finished the draft of book three in my series. I was on a roll. Heck, my brain even gave me another idea for a new book series.

And then, one by one, sickness hit the house and I was quarantined to the spare bedroom in the hopes of keeping my hubby healthy. It worked and he was the only person in the house to not get super sick.

The problem with the spare room was the lack of good places to actually write. Anywhere I tried in the room meant that I was hunching over and I couldn’t do it for long. So I spent the almost week in seclusion reading and watching YouTube and TikTok. Which meant that I ended February an additional 9 handwritten pages down.

I started March 18 pages down from where I planned on being at this time of the year, as well as missing a few other goals. Normally, this would send me into a shame spiral, but I do realize that a bad month or two does not mean that my year is going to be bad.

I just have to look at the previous month and ask myself why things went sideways. There really wasn’t much I could’ve done in February to change the outcome other than pull a chair into the spare room to make it easier to write, but by the time I had the thought, I was almost ready to be let out.

March is off to an amazing start. And, if I keep that momentum going, I should be back on track to end the quarter with the majority of my goals met.

How has the beginning of the year been treating you? Sluggish or amazing? Let me know!
