Getting My Butt Kicked

Seeking out things that challenge me.

Get knocked down seven times, but get up eight. This used to not be my motto. Life would kick me in the teeth and I’d give up. Nobody believed I should be a writer? Guess I should go to college for education (spoiler alert: that didn’t pan out).

It wasn’t until I started taking martial arts that I stopped drifting and started leaning in when things got tough. I sort of woke up and realized I needed to hit life back if I wanted to stop drifting.

Which meant sticking with things, especially when they got difficult.

My martial art is difficult and painful. I constantly find myself confused and frustrated when I can’t do something I feel like I should get right away. I’m lucky I have a great training partner that knows when I need to grab a drink of water to get my head back in the game.

Writing’s been the same way. I stopped listening to the people who said it wasn’t possible and put myself out there. A lot of doors were slammed in my face, but I kept at it until I got my first yes with Geek & Sundry. I should’ve kept going as hard for more yeses, but I grew complacent with the one. Now, I’m back to being hungry for the next opportunity.

I’m hungry for the next challenge. I finished my 5K Tough Mudder, so I signed up for the next level of it (10 miles here I come!). I hate being bored at the gym, so I’m constantly on the lookout for something new to do or I hit up one of my friends who is basically Satan and pushes me passed my current limits.

At my sister’s behest, I downloaded Couch to 5K on my phone. I had to restart when I hit week four because I wasn’t being consistent enough to keep up, but I’m in week six of my second try. I’m not a fan of running, but I plan on signing up for my first non-obstacle course 5K in October. It’s a challenge I want to try.

Also, don’t tell my sister, but running’s become a bit of a stress reliever. I don’t need to hear the “I told you so.”

I’m on the hunt for the next mountain for me to conquer. Do you have any suggestions?
