How I did this year and what I’m doing going forward.

It’s that time of year again where I go back over my 2023 goals and set up 2024 goals.

This year has been a roller coaster. I changed up my system mid-year and then promptly forgot to look at my goals. I had set 18 goals at the beginning of the year and completed… 5. Oof, that’s a had thing to admit to. That’s one less completed goal than last year. Which is not good.

So I’m switching up things a bit in the new year in an effort to force myself to look at my goals more to stay on track. Before I talk about that, let’s look at which goals I did accomplish this year.

2023 Goals

  1. Write 52 blogs or Medium posts. Completed! I was way more consistent about writing here and managed to sprinkle in a few blog posts on my website.
  2. Read 52 books. Completed. I blew this one out of the water, partially because I dropped audible and got a KU subscription so I always have a book on me.
  3. Finish writing 4 books. Nope. I had some writer’s block and a few other things that kept me from completing this.
  4. Money goal. Nope.
  5. Full time creative. Sorta? I feel like I need to bring in a bit more money each month before I would be comfortable calling this completed.
  6. Money goal. Nope.
  7. Arbitrary weight goal. Nope. Not even close.
  8. Arbitrary pant size goal. Nope.
  9. 10 pull-ups with no bands. Nope. In fact, I spent most of the year not exercising. Part of that was to give my body time to heal from some injuries, part of it was laziness.
  10. Complete 15K Tough Mudder. Completed! But it was a struggle.
  11. Run 1 mile every day for 30 days. Nope.
  12. Full splits. Nope.
  13. Arbitrary debt related goal. Nope.
  14. Savings goal. Nope.
  15. 4 30 day challenges. Nope.
  16. Cleanout closet. Completed.
  17. Fill 12 notebooks. Nope, I only finished 10. Still a good try.
  18. Finish my hubby’s afghan. Completed! And I’m almost finished with a second one!

With all of the incomplete goals, I would normally feel like a failure, but this was also one of the best years for writing that I have had in forever.

With that said, what am I doing differently to complete more goals? I’m adding some sub-goals to a bunch of my larger goals. This will allow me the dopamine hit of completing something while working toward my bigger goal and force me to look at my yearly goals page more. I am still doing 90 day goal setting as well as breaking down my goals by month.

2024 Goals

  1. Write 52 blogs or Medium posts.
  2. Read 52 books (2 of which need to be martial arts related and 4 craft or self help)
  3. Finish writing 4 books (type 366K words and write 732 handwritten pages)
  4. Full time creative
  5. Publish 2 books
  6. Money goal.
  7. Fill 12 notebooks
  8. Finish an afghan
  9. Debt related goal (with 3 sub-goals)
  10. Savings goal (with 2 sub-goals)
  11. Weight goal (with 4 sub-goals)
  12. Clothing size goal
  13. Full splits
  14. Complete a 15K Tough Mudder
  15. 10 pull-ups with no bands (6 sub-goals)
  16. 4 30 day challenges

If you don’t count the sub-goals, I have fewer goals this year than I did last year, but I feel like I was very thoughtful in my choosing of each goal. I put a lot of thought into why I wanted to do each thing and I think that with the combination of the sub-goals will make me more likely to complete my goals this year.

Do you have any big goals for 2024? Let me know so we can cheer each other on!
